Ralph
Hepburn
Dodge City, Juli 4th, 1921: From the drop of the flag, Ralph Hepburn
and his eight-valve Harley-Davidson took the lead. His opening pace
was terrific, so fast that rival pit crews shook their heads and
muttered that it couldn´t last. He flashed down the straightway and
up the back stretch past the golden fields of wheat with clock-like
regularity. His motor was as fast at the finish as at the start. When
"Hep" got the checkered flag, Seymour, Indian, still had 12
miles to go. "Hep" made the 300 miles in 3 hours, 30 minutes
and 3 seconds, for an average of 85,7 miles per hour. (The
Harley-Davidson Enthusiast, August 1921)
